The Month of Love

Here we are, half way through February and inching closer to spring! Valentine’s Day has come and gone garnishing relief for most. Honestly, we were never big on celebrating Valentine’s Day. To us it was a silly commercialized “holiday”; a way to get everyone out buying…buying cards, buying chocolates, buying flowers, buying jewelry. Spending money to show your significant other how much you love them.

For us, it seemed ridiculous that people needed to be reminded with a special day to show love. Truthfully, that should be every day. Every day we should show those most important to us that they are just that…important. Find a moment during a busy day to give them a call. Let them know you are thinking of them. Tell them that you love them.

We essentially banished all things Valentine’s Day in our home for many years. We limited our celebration to a dinner out (and take our word for it – not all of those dinners were successful – we actually left one dinner without eating well dinner). You had to battle crowds of others too trying to celebrate. Then there were mishaps at restaurants due to the crowding that they either were not officially prepared for or some other unfortunate event that occurred behind the scenes and continued playing out throughout the dinner rush. So yeah, we were never a fan of Valentine’s Day.

All of that changed when we decided to get married. (A side note, we were together for 15 years before we married having lived together for 9 of those years.) Since we had done nothing in our relationship in the traditional manner, we decided that our wedding should be much of the same…non-traditional. So we opted for a destination wedding in Maui and coincidentally in February. It was a beautiful beach ceremony and the week after we were still in Maui to celebrate no less Valentine’s Day.

February has now become the month of love in our home. We “observe” Valentine’s Day but our main focus for the month is our anniversary. We decorate the house with hearts, love signs, wreaths and flowers. Plans are made for special dinners both in and out. And the best part is that we incorporate other family members into our plans with our yearly trip to Florida to visit loved ones!

This year our anniversary fell on a Saturday which could not be more perfect to plan a great night. We decided on Del Frisco’s in Boston’s Seaport. We’ve always been fans of Del Frisco’s, their food never disappoints, the views of the Harbor are perfect especially at sunset and the staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We mentioned in our online reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary so they covered our table in rose petals and sent out a special dessert. (Also a lovely bouquet of flowers came home on Saturday morning which was a nice surprise!)

For Valentine’s Day we decided a night in was best, since like we mentioned, nights out have not always gone as planned. We had a lovely dinner at home and made a great Sangria. We finished the night off relaxing by the fire and cuddling with our fur baby.

We have and will continue our month in much the same manner with all things love. There have been and still are dinners planned for the two of us at a couple of our favorite local restaurants. As we mentioned, soon enough we will be packing and heading to Florida to visit with family and soak up warmth, sunshine and more love.

Before you know it, February will unfortunately come to an end but not the love. Our love will keep growing stronger each day. We hope that you are enjoying your month of love with family, friends and all those special loved ones in your lives!
